7 Bible Verses for Times of Tragedy
After the Kariba RIDA ferry tragedy, grief, questions and shaken faith can feel overwhelming. The Bible offers comfort without dismissing pain: God is near the brokenhearted, hears our questions, sees every tear, understands suffering through Jesus, holds us in His love, and promises a future without death, mourning or pain.
When tragedy strikes, one of the first questions people may ask is:
โWhere was God?โ
After the Kariba RIDA ferry accident, this question may be especially painful for survivors, bereaved families, families still awaiting news of their loved ones, and everyone who witnessed or was affected by the tragedy.
Some may be angry with God. Others may feel abandoned. Some may be asking why God allowed some people to survive while others did not.
These are not easy questions, and the Bible does not ask us to pretend they are.
The Bible gives us permission to lament, question, cry and bring our pain before God.
1. God is close to the brokenhearted
โThe LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.โ โ Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
When your heart is broken, God is not far away. You may not feel His presence right now, but Scripture reminds us that He draws near to those who are hurting.
For someone who has lost a loved one, there may be no words adequate enough to describe the pain. God understands the depth of that pain.
2. You are allowed to ask, โWhy?โ
โHow long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?โ โ Psalm 13:1 (NIV)
David asked God difficult questions.
He didn’t hide his confusion behind religious language. He brought his pain directly to God.
If you’re asking โWhy did this happen?โ, โWhy them?โ, or โWhy did I survive?โ, you are not a bad Christian.
Sometimes faith means bringing even our hardest questions to God.
3. God can handle your tears
โYou keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.โ โ Psalm 56:8 (NIV)
Your tears matter.
The tears of a mother waiting for news.
The tears of a husband who has lost his wife.
The tears of a child who no longer has a parent.
The tears of a survivor remembering what happened.
God does not dismiss those tears.
You don’t have to be strong every moment.
4. Even Jesus wept
โJesus wept.โ โ John 11:35 (NIV)
This is one of the shortest verses in the Bible, but it carries a powerful message.
Jesus stood before the tomb of Lazarus and wept.
He knew Lazarus would be raised, yet He still entered into the grief of those who were mourning.
This reminds us that crying is not a failure of faith.
Grief and faith can exist in the same heart.
5. God understands suffering
โFor we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses…โ โ Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)
Christian hope is not based on a God who watches suffering from a distance.
Jesus experienced rejection, sorrow, pain and death.
That means when you say, โGod, you don’t understand what I’m going through,โ Scripture points us to Jesus and says:
He understands.
6. Nothing can separate us from God’s love
โFor I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.โ โ Romans 8:38โ39 (NIV)
This does not mean that tragedy doesn’t hurt.
It means that tragedy does not have the final word over God’s love.
Even in the darkest valley, God’s love remains.
For those mourning a loved one, for survivors struggling with memories, and for families still waiting for answers, this promise can become an anchor.
7. There will be a day when suffering ends
โHe will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.โ โ Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
We may not have answers to every question today.
We may not understand why the Kariba tragedy happened.
We may still be waiting.
We may still be grieving.
But the Christian story ends not with death, pain and tears, but with God making all things new.
So, Where Is God When Tragedy Happens?
Sometimes we may not understand where God is in the tragedy.
But Scripture tells us where we can find Him:
He is near to the brokenhearted.
He listens to our questions.
He sees our tears.
He understands our suffering.
He holds us in His love.
And He promises a future where death and pain will be no more.
If you are a survivor, you don’t have to pretend that you’re okay.
If you have lost someone, you don’t have to rush your grief.
If you are still waiting for news about someone you love, your uncertainty and pain matter.
And if your faith is shaken, bring your questions to God.
You don’t have to have all the answers to come to Him.

Heartbreak doesnโt always come with closure. Sometimes itโs a breakup. Sometimes itโs betrayal, ghosting, unreturned feelings, or loving someone who couldnโt love you back. For many young people, emotional pain is silent, but heavy.
The Bible doesnโt ignore heartbreak. God sees the tears, the confusion, and the questions. Scripture offers not quick fixes, but real steps toward healing, restoration, and hope.
1. Acknowledge the PainโGod Can Handle It
Verse: โThe Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.โ
โ Psalm 34:18
Healing doesnโt start with pretending youโre okay. God doesnโt ask you to minimize your pain or rush your healing. He draws near to those who are hurting, not those who hide it.
Relatable truth: Crying doesnโt mean youโre weak, it means youโre human.
2. Give Yourself Permission to Grieve
Verse: โBlessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.โ
โ Matthew 5:4
Grief isnโt only about death, itโs about loss. Lost dreams. Lost trust. Lost connection. Jesus acknowledges grief as part of healing, not something to avoid.
Relatable truth: Healing doesnโt mean forgetting, it means processing.
3. Guard Your Heart While It Heals
Verse: โAbove all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.โ
โ Proverbs 4:23
After heartbreak, itโs easy to reopen wounds by replaying memories, stalking profiles, or seeking closure from the same place that caused pain. Guarding your heart may mean setting boundaries, even digital ones.
Relatable truth: Sometimes healing requires distance, not answers.
4. Release What You Canโt Control
Verse: โCast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.โ
โ 1 Peter 5:7
You canโt control how someone treated you or why things ended, but you can choose where you place your pain. God invites you to hand Him what you canโt fix.
Relatable truth: Closure doesnโt always come from people, it comes from God.
5. Choose Forgiveness, Not Bitterness
Verse: โBe kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.โ
โ Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness doesnโt excuse the hurt, it frees your heart from being stuck in it. Holding onto bitterness keeps the wound open. Forgiveness is often a process, not a moment.
Relatable truth: Forgiveness is for your peace, not their comfort.
6. Let God Restore Your Identity
Verse: โI have loved you with an everlasting love.โ
โ Jeremiah 31:3
Heartbreak can make you question your worth. God reminds you that His love isnโt based on performance, attraction, or someone elseโs choice. You are still chosen, valued, and loved.
Relatable truth: Someone walking away doesnโt reduce your value.
7. Trust God With Whatโs Next
Verse: โHe heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.โ
โ Psalm 147:3
Healing takes time, but God promises restoration. Moving on doesnโt mean erasing the past, it means allowing God to shape your future without being chained to pain.
Relatable truth: Healing doesnโt rush, but it does come.
Final Reflection for Young Hearts
Heartbreak is painful, but it doesnโt get the final word. God does.
Moving on doesnโt mean you stop caring. It means you stop letting pain control your future. With God, healing becomes possible, not overnight, but step by step.If youโre hurting right now, pray this simple prayer:
โGod, help me heal what I donโt understand and release what I canโt change.โ

You smile for the selfie. Post the TikTok. Say, โIโm good.โ
But inside, you feel hollow.
Tired, but not just physically.
Stuck, but the world keeps moving.
For Gen Y and Gen Z, the pressure is real โ and so is depression.
We’re the generations most connected digitally, but often feel most alone emotionally. Whether itโs social media comparison, academic pressure, broken family dynamics, heartbreak, trauma, or just the heavy fog that appears for โno reasonโ โ depression is a shadow many walk through silently.
But here’s the truth the darkness tries to hide:
God sees you. God is not afraid of your sadness. God steps into it.
Letโs walk through 7 honest, real Scriptures that speak directly to the soul when depression hits hardest.
1. โGod, are You even near?โ
Verse: Psalm 34:18 (RSV)
โThe Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.โ
Depression often feels like abandonment. Like everyone left โ including God.
But this verse flips that feeling: when your heart is shattered, God is closest. Not when you’re strong. Not when you’re posting your best. But when you’re too weak to get out of bed, too numb to cry, too tired to try again.
He’s there. In the silence. In the breakdown. With you.
2. โWhy am I like this?โ
Verse: Psalm 42:11 (RSV)
โWhy are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.โ
Even biblical authors wrestled with emotional lows. David, a king and worshipper, had seasons of despair.
He didnโt hide it โ he journaled it. Sung it. Prayed it. And reminded himself that darkness isnโt the end.
You donโt have to be okay all the time โ but you can still anchor your soul in hope, even when it trembles.
3. โI canโt control my thoughts.โ
Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:5 (RSV)
โWe destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.โ
Depression can distort reality. You hear voices like: โYouโre worthless. Youโll always feel like this.โ
God doesnโt shame you for those thoughts โ but He equips you to fight them. With truth.
Taking thoughts captive doesnโt mean they instantly disappear โ it means you challenge them with the identity God gave you, not the lies depression whispers.
4. โIโm tired of pretending.โ
Verse: Matthew 11:28 (RSV)
โCome to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.โ
You donโt have to fake it with God. He already knows.
And instead of demanding you do more, be more, or say the right prayers, Jesus simply says:
โCome.โ
Not when youโve fixed it. Not when the anxiety is gone. Right now โ with the heavy burden.
And Heโll carry it with you. No filters. No judgment.
5. โI feel numb.โ
Verse: Romans 8:26 (RSV)
โLikewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.โ
Sometimes depression steals your words.
You want to pray, but nothing comes out. Just a sighโฆ or silence.
And thatโs okay. The Holy Spirit prays for you. Intercedes with groans deeper than language.
Your silence is not emptiness to God. Itโs a sacred space where He is already speaking on your behalf.
6. โEveryone has moved on but me.โ
Verse: Isaiah 41:10 (RSV)
โFear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.โ
People may forget. Friends may fade. But God says: โI am still here.โ
He doesnโt minimize your pain or rush you through it.
He simply promises:
- Strength when yours is gone
- Help when itโs hard to explain whatโs wrong
- Presence that never backs away
7. โWill this darkness ever lift?โ
Verse: Lamentations 3:22โ23 (RSV)
โThe steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.โ
When youโre depressed, it feels like nothing will change. But Godโs mercy renews daily.
That means each morning is a small miracle.
Youโre still here. Still breathing. That alone is grace.
The pain may not vanish overnight โ but new mercies show up in unexpected ways:
- a song lyric that moves you
- a kind message from a friend
- a moment where you feel peace again
Final Words:
If youโre in a dark place โ you are not broken. You are human. And God is not disappointed in you.
Even Jesus wept. Even prophets doubted. Even heroes of faith cried out from the pit.
So bring your sadness. Bring your silence.
And remember:
You are seen. You are safe. You are still held.

Are you hurting right now? Know that the Word of God can speak to you in every situation of your life. Here are some reminders for you.
- Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Remember this, you are not hurting because God has left you, or is far away. God is near. Invite him in your life, especially when you are hurting.
- John 11:35 Jesus wept.
When Jesus saw the grief that people had when Lazarus had died, his love and compassion for us made him cry. This is our God, who feels with us, who weeps with us when we are hurting and who smiles with us when we rejoice.
- Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
God doesnโt want you to hurt or mourn. There is comfort.
- Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Give your pain and hurt to Jesus. He doesnโt want you to carry it, but will give you peace instead.
- John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
Jesus doesnโt promise us that everything in this world will be fine, quite the opposite, there will be hardship. Thatโs when you need to turn to Jesus, because he has overcome the world
- Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Here is something challenging when we are hurting. To have peace, find it in your heart to forgive the person who hurt you. Forgiveness is not earned or deserved, but given anyway, just like God forgives us.
- Revelation 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
Ultimately, we live with the hope that one day there will be no more pain, no more crying. One day we will be with Jesus in the new Jerusalem. There is an end to pain, hurting, suffering. But there is no end to Godโs love and grace.

The Hebrew word translated as โpeaceโ is โshalomโ. It means more than the opposite of conflict. Itโs about being complete and safe. This is why we ultimately only can find peace in God. Without God we are not complete and not at peace.
- Psalm 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.ย
You have a choice in your life. When you are in a conflict, do you seek peace? Take the first step and reach out to anyone you are not at peace with and seek peace.
- Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
There is blessing and happiness in being a peacemaker. As children of God we are called to seek peace.
- Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
We know there are conflicts and troublemakers in the world. But the Bible tells us to do what we can to live in peace with everyone.
- Isaiah 55:12 For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
When you walk with God in peace, everything is different. There may be conflict around you, but worldly conflict and troubles canโt overcome the peace of God.
- Romans 14:19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Actively work for peace, not just for your own sake, but also to build up others around you.
- 2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.
The Bible wishes for you, and for all to have peace. May God be with you, so that your life will be at peace and complete.
- Numbers 6:24-26 The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
The priestly blessing tells us that in Godโs presence there is peace. Seek God and you shall find him. God bless you.

When you are feeling anxious or worried, itโs a good idea to go to the Bible. God knows our fears and worries, and the Bible has many words to lift us up, giving hope and relieving us of anxiety.
- Isaiah 41:13 For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, โFear not, I am the one who helps you.โ
You are not alone. God is here, He is with you. This is an important reminder because anxiety can be overwhelming. But God is here to help you.
- John 14:1 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
God became a man, Jesus Christ, and lived as one of us. He knows your situation. Jesus reminds you to turn to him in faith.
- Psalm 34:4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
When you seek God, the Bible tells us that God will answer. Seek God with all your heart and he will deliver you from your fears.
- Psalm 94:19 When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.
Anxiety can make your heart feel heavy and burdened. Read the Word of God and let God lift you up.
- Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.
Our fears try to bring us down and trap us. God is our refuge, he is our safe harbour. Put your trust in God.
- Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
When we let God into our hearts, there is peace. That peace isnโt just for ourselves, but for all who follow Jesus Christ.
- Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
We need to keep our faith in God. It can be hard when we are anxious. But ask people around you to pray for you.
